Get To Know Jessica | Featured Blogger Friday
What a whirlwind of a week. I must apologise for my lack of posts and activity on my blog, but between social events and amazing opportunities I just haven’t had the time. Many of you may know that I got engaged recently (yay!), so when I saw that ‘Say Yes To The Dress UK’, were looking for applicants, I of course decided to apply. After a looong application process, I received the news yesterday that I have been successful! Filming starts in May; a little sooner than I would had planned to start dress shopping but nevertheless, I am incredibly exciting to say the least. Anyway, back to a strict blogging and YouTube schedule this week I think.
More importantly, this Friday we’re getting to know Jessica from Modern Day Girl Blog. She began her blog in the hope of inspiring other people to be creative with organisation, money and hobbies. Since being diagnosed with anxiety, she also likes to write advice and tips on what helps her to get through it, in the hope that people who also suffer from it benefit from reading. In 2016 you can expect heaps of exciting content such as giveaways, money saving tips and more. She’s always looking to collaborate with fellow bloggers, so get in touch.
Why did you start blogging?
I’ve always loved writing. I’m talking personal journaling, list writing, writing emails (I know it sounds sad!), helping friends with their CV/covering letters, etc. so blogging seemed like the perfect outlet for me. I also suffer from anxiety and I find it much easier to write about my feelings than talk about them, so a blog really helps me with that. I’m also a real stickler for bad grammar and punctuation. This is probably to do with my anxiety with knowing I’ve not given my best and feeling like a failure!
I’d also like to hope that my blog will help just one other person. Anxiety can be quite a lonely experience so I want sufferers to be able to share their experiences and open up discussions around anxiety. At the same time my blog is not just for sufferers of anxiety. I’m also obsessed with organisation, planning and living frugally – a great combination for anxiety sufferers!
Describe your blog in five words.
I found this so hard! But here you go – A space for the anxiety-prone. Anxiety-prone is one word by the way, I’m not cheating!
What helps give you inspiration/motivation?
My main motivation for starting the blog was through encouragement from friends. Without this I wouldn’t have started it I don’t think! My inspiration and further motivation now comes from all the positive feedback I’ve had from friends and other bloggers. Knowing that I am helping really keeps me going, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop blogging now.
I also get my inspiration from the world around me. Things I see, hear and do all inspire me to write. I’d never considered myself artistic but I can appreciate the little things in life and am always thinking about how I could include these on my blog.
How do you stay organised?
Naturally I think I’m quite an organised person. Bordering on the obsessed! But I know not everyone is like me. I use to-do lists and other lists for everything. I use Evernote for blog notes and use a planner for my everyday life. I need to be organised otherwise my brain goes into meltdown and I suddenly find myself being a shivering wreck in the corner of my living room. As I work full time also I have a planner for work related stuff only which is left at work.
What type of posts do you enjoy reading the most?
I really love the personal, raw accounts that bloggers write. I find them so interesting and you can really get a feel for the person with these posts. I do struggle with talking about my feelings but it’s sometimes nice to know that I’m not alone.
As you know I like lists so I also LOVE list-type posts!
How often can we expect posts from you?
I try and blog as often as I can. At the moment it ranges between 3-5 posts per week. I have a weekly link post included in this. It’s a bit difficult at the moment with also working full-time.
What’s your favourite post to date?
So far I think my favourite post to date has been ‘A list on why to-do lists are great’. There are those lists again! It seemed to be quite popular so I’m glad I’m not the only one who is a little too obsessed with them.
What have you learnt in your time as a blogger?
I’ve learnt that the blogging community is extremely friendly and supportive. I never imagined I’d e-meet all the people I have since starting! It’s really great that everyone is willing to help and I’m so glad to be a part of it.
Another thing I’ve also noticed whilst blogging is that it really takes dedication. Don’t get me wrong I am definitely NOT stopping now but you really need to persevere if you want to keep it up.
What advice would you give to someone starting a blog?
I’d say to any new bloggers that you have to really want to do it. Without 100% commitment I think any new blogger would struggle. If you do – I promise you it’ll be so worth it.
I’d also say to not to copy anybody else’s work. I get so much satisfaction from each and every post that I write knowing it’s something I’ve created. Copying other’s work takes that away and I think takes away the magic of blogging in general.
What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
Blogging is great because it’s a creative outlet. You can write about anything and everything and you don’t have to answer to anyone. You aren’t silenced or interrupted by anyone. Perfect!
Which country are you from?
I am from England. It’s funny really because a lot of my readers are from the US!
How do you like to spend your weekends?
My ideal weekend is to have no plans whatsoever. This s what I strive for but doesn’t always happen! It generally encompasses wine at some point during the weekend though, as well as at least one film. Other than that I like spending time with family and friends. Did I mention wine?
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
- I want to visit a rainforest. Doesn’t matter where it is, I just know I want to visit one.
- To become a full time professional blogger. This is my dream come true and I’m going really make it happen.
- I’d like to own a goat. They are the cutest, funniest animals! Oh and an Alpaca. They are even better!
What do you do to relax?
I read books and I also like walking. I sometimes still play computer games if I feel like it but that can take hours of my time up!
