NYX Cosmetics Lipsticks | Review
We want it all when it comes to beauty products for the lips: colour, shine, staying power, plumpness and an affordable price. NYX Cosmetics lipsticks ticked all the right boxes for me and quickly became an obsession during 2015. Their buttery formula and highly pigmented shades are enough to make anybody fall just as much in love with them. I briefly mentioned them in my 2015 beauty favourites and it was requested I do a full detailed review, so tah dah!
*I apologise in advance for giving these lipsticks such high praises; I can’t think of many bad things to say!*
“Treat your lips to a kiss of smooth, creamy color with our irresistible Butter Lipsticks in 12 new luscious shades. The formula’s delicate satin texture fused with highly saturated color delivers full-yet-lightweight coverage with a luxurious satin finish.” – nyxcosmetics.com
Black Label Lipstick
“A creamy, dreamy lipstick with a velvety smooth finish and hyper-glamorous shades for every look and every inclination. NYX’s Black Label Lipstick has rich emollient properties that ensures the color glides on and hydrates your pout at the same time. From Extreme Red to Earthy to Frosted Pink.” – beautylish.com
Ok…where to begin? Let’s go for the obvious thing, the packaging. The Black Label Collection looks much more high end than all of the other NYX lipsticks. The delicate lace pattern detailing and transparent bottom is something NYX have clearly thought hard about. I love how the colour is encapsulated in the bottom because it makes storing them so much easier; I can see at a glance which one I’d like to grab. The Butter Lipstick collection is a little more low-end. They’re made of cheap flimsy plastic and are prone to cracking. There is quite a price difference between the two and it’s easy to see why, (here I am again, having a windge about damn packaging!).
Despite the massive contrast in packaging, these NYX lippies are pretty similar. Their butter lipsticks are, well, buttery. I’ve tried creamy lipsticks before but nothing ever on this level. And guess what? Their Black Label Collection are also extremely buttery. There is nothing dissimilar between the two in terms of texture. My lips feel moisturised all day which I of course love, especially during the cooler months. But what I love even more is how NYX haven’t compromised on the pigmentation. Despite being ultra creamy, they’re also true to colour and stay put throughout the day, which is great for a high-street or ‘drugstore’ lip product. The only letdown? They’re almost too creamy and can be tricky to apply; I found myself slipping around and making a bit of a mess.
Ok, so the packing is, well, alright, and the formula is dreamy, but what about the finish? The Black Label Lipsticks are slightly less opaque than the Butter ones. They have a semi-gloss finish and I found myself having to layer them on to get the same intensity, but i’d rather have the added moisture. The Butter lipsticks have been described bang on by NYX, they truly do have a luxurious satin finish. They have no sparkle or shimmer and The pigment is intense yet the coverage is lightweight, a combo I really do love. I’ve found all of NYX lipsticks can feather out of my lip line after a few hours of wear, but this can be fixed by applying a lip liner first.
The three shades I own are Pops Explosif (Butter), Socialite and Sweet Prawn (both Black Label). Pops Explosif is described as “mauve”, however I’d say it’s more a nude pink; the perfect daytime shade, and it could be paired with a classic smokey eye for something a little more special. A great dupe for Pops is MAC Brave lipstick. It practically lives in my handbag so I can quickly top it up wherever I am. Socialite and Sweet Prawn are bolder, more autumn appropriate shades. I bought them when I was going through a plum and berry faze. I’d say these shades are one of my favourites in my collection because they’re so unique to anything else that I have.
The Black Label lipsticks exceeded my expectations and ranked very high on my favourites. I can’t wait to add more colours to my collection. Not to mention they smell so yummy! I can familiarise them with a grape flavoured sugary sweet. It may not be something everyone likes but I find it very refreshing.
The butter lipstick is something I find myself grabbing almost every day. It’s a very easy shade to wear and I can’t wait to splurge on more colours. NYX originally released their Butter lipsticks in five wearable shades but due to popular demand, they have extended the collection greatly.
Have you tried any of these before? Do you have any colour recommendations? Give me some feedback in the comments.

9/10. The packaging of the Butter lipsticks is cheap and flimsy. Some people may not be so keen on the scent of the Black Label lipsticks.
