How to Start a Successful Blog
Today I am going to advise you on how to start a successful blog. By successful I mean a blog that people are going to want to follow and revisit.
These are what I believe to be the most important steps to achieve this as well as some useful tips & tricks at the end based on my experience. I am not saying that I am by any means successful.
Choose a creative blog name
Think of something unique. There are so many blogs out there – how can you make yours stand out? Consider your target audience and write down your ideas. Click here to learn more on this.
Match it with your domain name. Matching your blog name with your domain name will help people remember you and it will avoid any confusion.
Select an awesome theme
Choose from 3,000+ existing themes. I would recommend starting with a free theme and only purchasing one if you feel the need. There’s lots of great themes – I use the Sight theme and I absolutely love it.
Keep it simple. Once people are on your blog you want them to stay. Don’t overwhelm them with lots of content on the home page. I show my latest blogs with a few widgets down the right hand side.
Trial the theme before your choose it. Don’t flick between themes constantly. This is ok if you’re just starting but as people revisit your blog, they will become confused by the change in design.
Customise it to suit you. Go to ‘my sites’, then ‘customise’ to alter the colours, widgets etc.
Write your first post. Ready? I was born ready!
Have a peak at other blogs. This is great for ideas if you’re stuck on where to start; but don’t steal any content!
Involve the audience. You want to engage the audience on your first few posts. Don’t be shy to ask for advice.
Plan any ideas that you have. I have a list on my phone with all of my ideas on which I like to work through.
Make a schedule. Plan which days of the week you would like to post on. This isn’t a must, but it is a should. People will become aware of when you post and they will revisit your blog. I post every Sunday and Wednesday as well as days in-between!
Concentrate on your first 100 words. This is the introduction and it’s what people can see in the quick read on the reader. You want it to be so interesting that people click to read the rest.
Don’t exceed 1,500+ words. *yawn*
Include images. Obviously try to include your own images to support your post, don’t steal them. I would also recommend using an editing software to enhance your images and put text over them etc.
Use the tags! People search through the tags provided on WordPress, or they can even search their own. If you have mentioned this tag on your post, it will simply pop up for that reader to see (that’s how people can stumble across your blog). I always like to use ‘beauty’, ‘makeup’ and ‘products’.
Tips & Tricks
Include an intro. I made a text widget in the customiser where I inserted an image of myself and a small introduction. This is the first widget that visitors see when they view my site.
Comment, like and follow other blogs. This is how you get noticed! It’s up to you how many blogs that you follow, but this is usually a good way to get noticed. Depending on your area of interest, follow others in that area. Chances are they’ll be interested in your blog.
Traffic doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient, it takes a while. Keep at it.
Use the widgets wisely. Insert follow buttons and promote your social media areas. I am on YouTube and BlogLovin’ so I created hyperlinked images which directs the reader to my pages.
Write seasonal appropriate posts. For example, i’m a beauty blogger so if it’s Valentines Day coming up, I will do a makeup look for that special day.
Think about making videos to support your posts. This is why I started my YouTube channel. People may prefer to watch something rather than read something.
Brand yourself. Create a logo or a banner for the header of your blog. This looks professional and it will attract more viewers.
That’s just about everything! I wish you the best of luck if you’re starting a blog and please comment down below and i’ll head over to your page to check it out.
If you wish to ask me any questions on how I achieved my theme (or anything really!) just leave a comment and i’ll try my best to help you.
